Hey People,
Have you noticed how the Conservatives are the ones that are in control of everything? The Church, the country...any and every kind of organization! Why is it that the Liberals aren't? Are [we] disposed to being the minority? Does it follow the bell-curve principle - with the Liberals being at the front, but in smaller proportion? Why might our behaviour be arranged in such a way? Are human-beings - speaking of the majority - scared? Too scared to try something new? Why are they/we (it seems like even Liberals can be Conservatives with respect to different issues. I mean, a person might have a Liberal view on gun-control, but might turn around and be rather conservative when it comes to abortion!) scared?
That brings me to the issue about being scared being a quality shared across all life forms. Everything is scared for it's life! Lower the life-form the more it has to be scared of. Yet, human beings, being at the top of the food chain, is still scared. Just of other humans now. Why is this quality (of being scared) so inherent to all life? Self-preservation?
Anyway, haven't really thought about this. Just thought I'd post this, because it's been running around the corridors of my mind without being inspected yet. So, yeah, if you've got the time, beat it up!
Luv,
C

Firstly, I don't agree that the Conservatives are the ones in control of everything. It's true in the US but not so in Japan, UK and France. In China, North Korea and Cuba, it's a communist rule. About India, I dont know because the stand of each party is unclear. But do you see any clear winners? On the economic scale, US is doing well. On the spiritual scale, I think India wins. In the innovation arena, I think Japan has set the bar.
I think that I am a Centrist leaning towards the Left. I take this stand because of my view on the way things are in life. I am a Centrist because I dont believe that there are absolute rights and absolute wrongs but just shades of grey. And that the only universal law that man can sustain is the "Do unto others...." law. I believe that I have a Leftist inclination because innovation has never sprouted from the status quo. It has always arisen from something breaking out of the norm. I believe alternative thought and a spirit of exploration/experimentation are a primary requirement for the constant progress of society and mankind on the whole.
However, alternative thought by definition cannot exist without the normal thought. But alternative thought becomes dogma upon it being proven and adopted by enough people, which brings us to the point you were talking about.
If one's very survival is dependent upon choosing the very next step properly, how much of a luxury of experimentation (which may or may not bring results) do you think he or she can afford? In such a scenario, it's easier to do what has been proven correct and maintain status quo (and also take the path of least resistance), than sticking one's neck out. I think this is the fear that the majority possess.
However, as people, we are far more willing to let someone else take the risk than take it ourselves. Many times we are even willing to support such experiments and alternative thinkers right in the midst of the majority (The Shanghai Project, The Idea of Incubators and Start-Ups, R&D Labs and others). This formula seems to mitigate the risks involved on both ends. This is also why we elect Liberals every now and then so that they may come in and reshape our thinking and set the standards for the new dogma - as a Nation, the loss in case of failure is easier to bear when spread amongst the populace. At other times (especially during civil strife and war) during turmoil and general unrest, people tend to turn to anything that offers the closest semblance of constancy (US during the second election Bush, and the other Autocratically ruled country that chose to elect the son of the dictator into power upon having become democratic).
I don't know which single label defines us - I see it all as shades of grey.
